The Future of Credit Unions

Peter Duffy, Associate Director, Sandler O’Neill & Partners, L.P.

Please join us to hear well known credit union speaker Peter Duffy respond to provocative questions from Sarah Snell Cooke of the CU Times.

• NCUA’s efforts to find merger partners: where is this heading?
• How many CUs do you see 5 years from now without major charter changes?
• What alternative contingency plans do CUs have other than converting to mutual savings banks?
• How many CUs and of what aggregate assets are looking at MSB conversions?
• How could large, healthy CUs work with the FDIC on resolution of bad assets? Why does size matter?
• Has the FDIC performed better than NCUA in the current financial crisis and if so, why?
• NCUA Assessments: How long will it take to dig out at the suggested rate of 15 – 40 basis points?
• With regards to the current consumer-friendly regulatory environment that causes headaches for CUs, where do you see compliance expenses going?

Afternoon Educational Session - 4:30 - 5:30

Adding Member Business Loans to the CU Portfolio
Frank Amantia, President and
Steven Smits, VP of Operations
Mid-Atlantic Financial Partners, LLC

The May educational session will feature Frank Amantia and Steven Smits of Mid-Atlantic Financial Partners, LLC, a local CUSO formed in 2003. The organization provides business loan origination, processing, underwriting, funding and servicing, and loss mitigation. Partners of the CUSO are Mid-Atlantic FCU, Prince George’s Community FCU and Visions FCU.

This session will focus on key considerations associated with adding MBLs to a credit union loan portfolio.  Amantia and Smits will address business lending regulatory issues; asset quality / loss concerns; and ways credit unions can engage member business lending, whether directly or through loan participations.  Credit union executives considering the addition of MBLs to their lending portfolio should attend this program and bring their questions.

In addition to serving as President of the CUSO, Frank Amantia holds the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Lending Officer of MAFCU.  He is a multi-disciplined banker with 30+ years experience.

VP of Operations of the CUSO, Mr. Smits holds a MBA from Johns Hopkins University and has worked with Deutsche Financial Services, FCNB and PNC Banks.

The session is free for those attending the evening session. Fees for the afternoon session only are $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
